The Birth of District 9110

By the end of the Rotary year 1980/81 there were more than 50 Rotary clubs in District 910, which spread over the West African Coast from Mauritania to Nigeria. There were 31 of these clubs in Nigeria. The Rotary International found it expedient to create two Districts out of District 910 for effectiveness in service delivery and administration. Thus District 911 and District 915 emerged by July 1, 1982. District 911 comprised of clubs in Nigeria and Rotarian Juli Adelusi-Adeluyi (RC IKEJA) became its first Governor.

This dynamic, 42 year old Rotarian, traveled the length and breadth of Nigeria to form 31 new Rotary Clubs. His successor, DG Bob Ogbuagu (RC Warri) added 25 clubs to bring the total number of clubs to 87, which encouraged Rotary International to split District 911 into two with the creation of District 912. District 911 covered Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Kwara and Sokoto states of Nigeria and District 912 the eastern and other parts of northern Nigeria.

Rotarian Babatunde Ajayi (RC Lagos) was Governor of District 911 in 1984/85. There was such a phenomenal growth in the number of Rotarians and clubs in Nigeria that by July 1986 there was a further creation of two more Districts in Nigeria. District 911, 912, 913 and 914 emerged with Rotarian HRM Adedapo Tejuosho becoming the Governor for District 911 in the 1986/87 year. That Rotary year, 68 new clubs were chartered in the four Districts in Nigeria with 46 of them from District 911.

In the 1990/91 Rotary year, Rotary International added 0 as the last figure for all Rotary Districts. Hence Nigeria District became 9110, 9120, 9130 and 9140.

The very impressive growth of Rotary in the 1980s brought widespread and great dividend to various Nigerian Communities. By the start of 1987/88 year there were 7829 Rotarians in 243 clubs in Nigeria. Rotary International reacted to this development by initiating policies that facilitated more awareness for Nigerians to become Rotarians and gave recognitions to outstanding Nigeria Rotarians such as Rotarian Jon. B. Majiyagbe becoming an RI Director.

However, due to further entrenchment of military rule and an economic decline, there came a lull in Rotary activities and growth in the 1990. Membership Development and Extension suffered attrition, which all the Districts in Nigeria are making great efforts to reverse. Rotary leaders continue to initiate policies and projects aimed at spreading the dividends of Rotary service to many more people in their communities and therefore rekindle their interest in Rotary and humanitarian efforts. District 9110 has collaborated with other Districts in Nigeria to among other activities:

  1. Organize Inter District Conference
  2. Hold meetings of all current and Past District Governors in Nigeria (CRODIGON).
  3. Host Rotary International Presidents who have visited Nigeria – Carlos Canseco (1985-86), Hugh Archer (1988-89), Cliff Dochterman (1991-92), Frank Devlyn (2000-2001), Richard King (2002-2003), Jon B. Majiyagbe (2003-2004) and William. B. Boyd (2006-2007).
