AREAS OF EMPHASES

Availability of safe drinking water from time immemorial has been a major issue in many communities worldwide. It is also appreciated that provision of water is closely tied to issues of sanitation and proper disposal of human waste so that we can reduce the risk of water borne diseases in our environment
We propose to address this issue in phases beginning with a project that will provide water borehole with treatment plant in schools in thirty communities in the district.
This will be combined with provision and rehabilitation of toilet facilities in the same schools.
Projected cost: Fourteen million naira.

  1. MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH:

1. Incubators and resuscitation equipment for newborn and premature babies.
We shall procure a total of 75 infant incubators and 10 infant resuscitation equipment as well as phototherapy equipment in a collaborative project between our district, Reach out to Africa (ROTA), and other districts in USA and India.
Some of these will be distributed to other districts in Africa with the majority being left for distribution to hospitals in our district through the clubs.
Projected cost: Nineteen million naira.

2. Safe motherhood:
In conjunction with the RFPD we plan to organize a project on safe motherhood that incorporates education on child spacing, vocational training, micro-credit and cancer detection for women in rural communities in our district.
Projected cost: Eleven million naira.

  1.  BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY:

Literacy empowers people. The ability to read and write gives a child a better chance of raising the next generation to prosperity and good health. It is the foundation for virtually all forms of education and an essential component of poverty reduction, social inclusion, and economic development. In 2010-11 Rotary year -

1. We hope to revive the CLE program as a teaching method in our schools.
2. Computers for schools: In further support of education we propose to embark on a computer project for schools.
Projected cost: Three million naira.

3. DEWEF Scholarships:
This new program which was developed in the 2009-10 year for indigent students in tertiary institutions in our district shall be continued with the award of new scholarships this Rotary year.
Projected cost: Two million naira

E. POVERTY ALLEVIATION:
We shall establish microcredit schemes district-wide for the indigent entrepreneurs by encouraging our clubs to do so.
Projected cost: 10 million naira.
In addition the "Adopt A Village" project that has recently secured Rotary Foundation grants will be fully supported and implemented.

F. The continued improvement our edifice THE ROTARY CENTRE shall continue. We plan to add more to the beauty and functionality of this facility begun and developed by preceding district administrations through:
-        Provision of a second exit that can serve occupants in case of emergencies.
-        Improvement of existing furniture and fittings.
-        Beautification of the environment.
Projected cost: 2 million naira.

G. Peace and Conflict Resolution and Prevention:
As our contribution to promoting world peace and understanding, our district has selected a candidate to participate in the worldwide selection process of world peace scholars for the 2 year graduate studies in peace and conflict resolution and prevention.

H. New Generations.
With the recent elevation of New Generations as an avenue of service, we shall encourage our clubs to pay keener attention to issues that address the needs of the youth in our communities.
Clubs will be requested to give more support to and strengthen the Rotaract and Interact clubs sponsored by them. In addition, we shall encourage the formation of more clubs and support the Rotaract and Interact districts.
The District plans to regain its certification status so that we can begin to participate in youth exchange programs once again.
In order to achieve this we shall pay keener attention to issues of abuse and harassment prevention as a necessary step to our recertification.
Our annual week long leadership project/camp for young people called RYLA will be implemented as usual in December.
