PROPOSED DISTRICT PROJECTS 2008-2009

  • WATER & SANITATION

Today over 1.1 billion people (nearly 20% of the world’s population lack access to safe and clean drinking water and 2.6 billion people are without basic sanitation facilities coupled with the fact that every 8 seconds, a child dies from a preventable waterborne disease. Provision of safe and available water is our priority as this will drastically reduce a child’s risk of death from waterborne disease.

We will Make Dreams Real by giving children hope and a chance at the future by providing clean and safe water to 50 communities in the District.

  • HEALTH AND HUNGER.

i. REDUCTION OF CHILD MORTALITY.

It is general knowledge that most public hospitals in Nigeria albeit our district lacks the basic facilities to handle complications related to child birth especially premature births. It has now become a common sight to see two children sharing the same incubator in our public hospitals while in some others they queue to take their turns and there are even some without one and death easily occurs in the process. The District and clubs will provide incubators, baby cots, nebunizer etc to hospitals in our communities.

ii. JAIPUR LIMB WORKSHOP IN ABEOKUTA

This will involve the provision of 500 artificial limbs in Abeokuta. This will empower beneficiaries to make use of their limbs instead of depending on their family members for their every need.

iii. INTERCONTINENTAL MEDICARE PROJECT.

This will be between our District and two (2) Districts in India. It involves 500 cataract (EPS), 100 orthopedic cases and 100 Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeries.

iv. BLOOD BANK

Immediate access to safe blood in times of emergencies can save lives therefore through the Safe Blood Africa Project we plan to have two (2) blood banks one at the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta and the other at General Hospital, Gbagada.

v. ROLL BACK MALARIA.

It is a known fact that malaria accounts for more deaths than any known disease especially in Africa. We shall provide free insecticide treated mosquito nets to most health centres and families in our communities to prevent mosquito bites.

3. LITERACY

Literacy empowers people. The ability to read and write gives a child a better chance of raising the next generation in prosperity and health. It is the foundation for virtually all forms of education and an essential component of poverty reduction, social inclusion, and economic development.

According to UNICEF, evidence indicates that the mortality rate for children under 5 falls by about half when mothers have primary education. Yet today, more than 800 million people in the world cannot read or write, and 64 percent of them are women and girls.

Wheel school

The Rotary Wheel School by Rotary Club of Falomo and assisted by the District is for children of beggars of between age 3 – 13 at Oko Oba, Ebute-Metta. Efforts are to have prototype at Idi-Araba and Agege. This is ongoing project and will be enhanced in new Rotary Year.

4. ROTARY CENTRE

i. PAUL HARRIS STATUTE.

A full Paul Harris statute typical of the one in front of RI Headquarters (Building) in Illinois Evanston, USA will be erected in front of the Rotary Centre as a befitting homage to Paul Harris – the founder of Rotary.

ii. SECURITY HOUSE.

The security of the Rotary Centre is vulnerable due to the absence of security personnel. We intend to build a security house by the gate after which we will re-apply for policemen to man the Centre. This will go a long way to enhance the safety of properties at the Centre.

iii. PAVING OF THE CAR PARK.

This will be done with interlocking stones which will enhance the beauty of the Rotary Centre. The park will be named after individual sponsors/clubs or branded with the name of a corporate sponsor.

iv. FURNITURE & FITTINGS.

We intend to equip the Rotary Centre with standard furniture and fittings to meet international standard. The Bank PHB Hall requires four of 5 tons air conditioners, good chairs and tables for seminars and meetings, public address system and multi-media facilities.

5. ROTARY FOUNDATION

The Rotary Foundation is the engine of Rotary. Efforts will be made to enhance the contributions to TRF. Our goal is $500,000 through Annual Giving, Major Donor, Every Rotarian Every Year etc. It is envisaged that there will be more PHF donors/Recipients clubs, EREY clubs. Clubs will be encouraged to apply for Matching Grants.

6. NEW GENERATION

Rotary youth Leadership Award (RYLA) will be unique this year as for the first time in Nigeria, the District will sponsor the best RYLArian to the International RYLA in Birmingham in June 2009.
