Polio Update

PolioPlus Rotary International
POLIO UPDATE As At JUNE 2010
END POLIO NOW

OUR JOURNEY SO FAR

On behalf of the Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, I would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to The Rotary Foundation, staff of the PolioPlus Division at the RI Headquarters, our PolioPlus Partners Project most especially the German Rotarians under the Rotary Deutschland Gemeindienst e. V for the support which Nigeria received in the course of the Rotary year which has assisted us tremendously in moving the polio eradication forward in Nigeria.

Our sincere thanks also go to the Rotarian Volunteers that travelled to Nigeria, at their own expense to lend support during the National Immunization Plus Days. We appreciate their dedication, commitment to the cause of End Polio Now and their love and concern for the Nigerian children.

Our appreciation also goes to the Rotary Leadership in Nigeria, the District Governors, Past District Governors, the District Governors Elects, States PolioPlus Representatives, members of the family of Rotary, Rotary clubs, and all the Nigerian Rotarians whose relentless efforts during the year cotributed to the progress achieved so far.

The year under review witnessed great progress... described as incredible strides in the polio eradication efforts in Nigeria. What with only 3 cases recorded so far in 2010 compared with 360 case during the same period in 2009... a 99.17% improvement, it is a clear indication that the goal of End Polio Now is achievable.

The battle still goes on as the virus is more wily than we can imagine and has a knack of showing up where least expected. So it is not over until is all over.

It is, therefore, very pertinent to state that in the coming Rotary year a crucial year in the end polio campaign and an election year in our country - all hands must be on deck as we redouble our efforts, particularly in the area of advocacy, monitoring and surveillance, during and in-between IPDs, at our club, community, LGA and state levels.

FROM MONTREAL, CANADA CONVENTION:

Eradicating polio is the world's obligation. Rotary's promise to eradicate polio worldwide took center stage during the 2010 RI Convention in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, as Rotarians were urged to finish the task the organization began 25 years ago.

At the third plenary session on 22 June, Bruce Aylward, director of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative at the World Health Organization, encouraged attendees to share the "terrific news" that polio is on the run, and that Rotary's vision of a polio-free world is within sight.

The night before, on 21 June, polio survivor Ramesh Ferris hand-cycled from the Palais des congres to Bonsecours Market in old Montreal for a ceremony that included the landmark's illumination with En finir avec la polio (End Polio Now). During the second plenary session earlier that day, a soccer ball signed by dignitaries in more than 20 countries as part of the Kick Polio Out Of Africa campaign arrived on stage to thunderous applause.

Aylward praised Rotarians for all they have accomplished in fighting polio. "You have fundamentally changed the polio eradication game, and you have changed it in your favor," he said.
